Men, who are not afraid to be a woman

My ten favourite men-in-drag songs

Men in drag has me always in splits. It is one thing, which guarantees a laughter from my side. I know it doesn’t show much of a depth for my character. Yeah, how to put it much better than: I am like that only!

Men wearing women’s clothes is nothing new. In the early films of the Indian film industry boys would often take up female roles. Men in drag is all the same a more ancient phenomenon. The reasons behind it can be different ranging from transvestism to transgenderism. I can imagine that during times or in societies when and where homosexuality was looked down upon, it was one of the ways for men to approach men. For heterosexual men, I can think, it is a means to make fun of women and in this way digest the rejection by them. At the same time it can also be seen as a rebellion against the society and attempt to break away from the roles imposed by the society based on gender. All the same, it is not these deeper thoughts that go through my mind, why I love these songs.

Here are my favourite 10 songs from Hindi films with men in drag. Since it all is supposed to be fun, no rules this time, except for the quite obvious ones like one song pro actor. 😉

1. Aake Sidhi Lagi Jaise – Half Ticket [1962]
MD: Salil Chowdhury; Lyrics: Shailendra; Singer: Kishore Kumar

This is the earliest song, that I have seen in Hindi films, which features a man singing in women’s clothes. Mumtaz Ali, Mehmood’s father, is supposed to have danced in women’s clothes in some films, but I couldn’t find any such videos or references to specific films. Maybe Richard, who has a profound knowledge of Hindi films from the 40s and early 50s, comes up with some such jewel.
I find it hard to suppress a laugh at any funny Kishore Kumar song, however he may overact. This one is a double laughter dose with KK in sort of gypsy girl costume. To make things funnier, he also sings in falsetto, which is at times out of tune AND in a duet with himself. You just can’t have more Kishore Kumar in one song than this. The funny thing is that he doesn’t even try to act coy or do any feminine gestures, he is just being his clowny self, only thing is that he has clothes on from the other gender.

2. Oy Chali Chali Kaisi HawaBluff Master [1963]
MD: Kalyanji-Anandji; Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan; Singers: Shamshad Begum & Usha Mangeshkar

With this duet Shamshad Begum embarks on nearly a decade full of singing for men. Shammi Kapoor also sets a tradition of Kapoor men in drag. A lovely duet!

3. Patli Kamar Nazuk UmarLootera [1965]
MD: Laxmikant-Pyarelal; Lyrics: Anand Bakshi; Singer: Shamshad Begum & Kamal Barot

Dara Singh gets the opportunity to don ghagra-choli to get unto the villains’ ship and charm (!) them with his and his colleagues’ assets. Groovy!
One would think that Mehmood would be having the maximum songs in drag, but I come up with three such songs for Dara Singh and only one for Mehmood. The latter surely has more scenes in drag than anybody else, but only one song to move his lips to in drag. Maybe I am wrong, if yes, please do correct me. Can you come up with the other two Dara-in-drag songs?

4. Suno Suno – Haseena Maan Jayegi [1968]
MD: Kalyanji-Anandji; Lyrics: Prakash Mehra; Singer: Mohd. Rafi & Mahesh Kumar

Well this is not much of a song but rather a parody of four popular songs of the 60s. Shashi does cut a good figure here with his slimmer figure, which suits the skirts and anarkalis and what not he wears in it. Eight years afterwards he would don a nautch girl’s attire in Shankar Dada and sing jooti lungi sitaronwaali, but I couldn’t find the video to it, but here is the audio to it.

5. Kajra Mohabbat WalaKismat [1969]
MD: O. P. Nayyar; Lyrics: Shailendra; Singers: Asha Bhosle & Shamshad Begum

One would say nobody is more suited for a drag song than Biswajeet and he does it with quite a panache. He would get more screen space and time for wearing a sari in Biwi Aur Makhan, but it hardly has any good songs, although the music is by Hemant Kumar and the lyrics by Gulzar. Even the film, although directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, hardly elicits any laughter from me.

6. Teen Kuwareeyan… Hathon Me Mehndi – Parde Ke Peechhey [1971]
MD: Shankar-Jaikishan; Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan; Singers: Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar & Shamshad Begum

One year back I hadn’t even heard of this movie leave alone the song. Vinod Mehra is of the opinion that a ghagra-choli is an essential gadget to catch a thief. Since I don’t have much to do with the police department I can’t verify it but he does seem to have fun dancing with Bindu and Yogeeta Bali. The C.I.D goes to any length to protect the citizens of India from crime!

7. Nathaniya Hale To Bada Maza – Johar Mahmood In Hong Kong [1971]
MD: Kalyanji-Anandji; Lyrics: Qamal Jalalabadi; Singer: Shamshad Begum

At last, at last, at last, Mehmood gets to lip sync to Shamshad Begum’s voice while wearing a sari and false hair and dance as well as seduce I. S. Johar. The song is full of double entendre, but all the same it is so full of joi de vivre and the fact that not only Mehmood but also Shamshad Begum seems to be having fun with the song, saves us from feeling embarrassed.

8. Malmal Me Badan Mora Chamke – Five Rifles [1974]
MD: Kalyanji-Anandji; Lyrics: ?; Singer: Asha Bhosle

I. S. Johar in turn gets to dance in a courtesan’s dress in his own film Five Rifles and makes for the ugliest of all men in drag in this list. Fooling the police has never been more crazy than this.

9. Bombay Se Baroda TakRafoo Chakkar [1975]
MD: Kalyanji-Anandji; Lyrics: Gulshan Bawra; Singers: Asha Bhosle & Usha Mangeshkar

The third scion of the Kapoor gets to wear a mini and jump around with his best friend in a train while trying to woo his then real-life girl-friend Neetu Singh. The excuse for wanting to wear the mini-skirts? They are witnesses of a heinous (how I love this word!) crime. Some Like It Hot in Hindi!

10. Sar-E-Bazar Karenge Pyar – Kaatilon ke Kaatil [1981]
MD: Kalyanji-Anandji; Lyrics: ?; Singers: Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle

Even macho Dharmendra gets to frolic in a Victorian sort of costume while declaring his love for Zeenat Aman. What’s more he also gets to move his lips to Asha Bhosle’s voice. Alas, the joy is short-lived!

By the way, did you notice the dominance of Kalyanji-Anandji songs in this list? Do you have some favourite songs in the category of men-in-drag?

Playlist to enjoy.

Terrific post, Harvey! I am in the middle of making dinner so I will come back, listen to a couple of songs tonight (if I don’t fall asleep!) and then a couple more tomorrow and so on! Incidentally, how do you come up with such great ideas that make me laugh even before I start reading the whole post? Just by looking at the pictures you have posted, it looks like Shashi Kapoor and Biswajeet were the best looking women!

Thank you, dear Lalitha! I had been planning this post since June last year and gathering songs for this. It was fun to watch the videos and watch the antics of men fumbling with their sari and artificial hair! 😉
The song teen kunwariya was totally new for me, when I heard it in September last year for the first time. I came upon it accidentally through an article on men in drag in Hindi films. As for the Dharmendra song, I knew that it existed but couldn’t recollect which it was till I saw a still from the song somewhere in Internet and then I searched thorugh the songs of all movies with Dharmendra and Zeenat in it. Thank god, there are not so many films with both of them.
I found the I. S. Johar song quite accidentally while searching for an Asha Bhosle song on you tube.
I hope it gives you many mirthful hours, which may brighten up your duties in the hospital. All the best and hugs to you!

Harvey, how could you forget the most iconic of them all?? 😦

(mere angane me tumhara kya kaam hai from Laawaris: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRC9SAquepA)

And a very pretty ‘heroine’, riffing off the ‘Come September’ theme:

(Aamir in drag – dole dole dil dole from Baazi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY6BK-cwmlQ)

Kismat proved what I always thought – that Biswajeet makes a very pretty woman, and that Babita makes a very good-looking man! The gods have a strange sense of humour, no?

      Thanks for the tips, Anu!
You are right, how could I forget Amitabh and mere angane me. No, I didn’t. Of ocurse I didn’t forget or better said, unfortunately I can’t forget! 😉 *shudder*
This way you could post it! 🙂

I had also thought of adding Aamir’s dole dole dil dole from Baazi. But then it has nothing to laugh about. Aamir does it all so perfect. One can’t really think that it is a man. No fun! Don’t you think that the men in drag of later years are all so perfect, no tumkhas and jhatkas, they look all, like real women. A bit too made up, but still! 😉 It is more fun, when it is obvious that they are men. Even Biswajeet managed that.

Speaking of Biswajeet, I really admire his guts to do such roles twice. You are right, he does look pretty in women’s clothes! 😉
You know, I would have loved to see the the triumvirate of the 50s and 60s do a drag act.
The nearest Dilip Kumar comes to it is in the song mere pairon me ghunghroo bandha de from Sunghursh
(mere pairon me ghunghroo bandha le from Sunghursh (1968): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCYCIVXCz10)

harvey, I *hated* the picturisation of Mere angane mein; I saw Laawaris when it released, and remember thinking to myself “Why did he want to cheapen himself so?” I still think that, so I’ll reflect your shudder. 🙂 I only posted it because it was probably the most famous of drag acts, since Rishi’s in Rafoo Chakkar.

You are right, when I think of drag acts in Hindi Cinema then this is the first one that comes to the mind. Everybody who grew up in India in the 80s had to go through this song. We need a purgation of sorts for this, don’t you think?
I don’t mind him in drag, but it takes a special skill to present oneself so ugly!

Filmfare did a special issue in 1988 on 75 years of Indian cinema. The last page carried a picture of Amitabh in mere angane mein with the caption something like this: In his early years, as an angry young man, he threatened the villains; when he took to comedy, no comedians laughed. The only role that he has not done in his phenomenal career is that of a heroine. I too hated it then but I think just did that for the sake of experimentation, which an actor should try always.

That is an interesting anecdote, which you relate!
Of course it is okay that he did the Laawaris act, it is just that it is not one of my favourites.
It is good all the same that he tried it. He maybe needed a better make-up! 😉

Dara Singh in drag. Now I have seen everything! Love all these songs, well most of them. It is so funny that every single person in the audience knew it was the hero in a girl’s get up. Only the villain and his henchmen were fooled.

Johar Mehmood in Hongkong is hilariously funny.

The prettiest of the lot is Aamir in Baazi and the ugliest is Amitabh.

Or if we pick from your list, Johar is the ugliest and Rishi is the prettiest.

Dara in drag is a revelation, isn’t it? D-in-D so to say! Quite explosive! 😉 I just can’t stop watching his acts in drag. Has me ROTFL everytime!

“It is so funny that every single person in the audience knew it was the hero in a girl’s get up. Only the villain and his henchmen were fooled.”

That is what makes it all the more comic, doens’t it?

Nathaniya hale is not only hilariously funny it is also such a good song! And Mehmood, it seems has inheirted the dance genes from his father.

Amitabh does look ugly in mere angane me and Aamir does look very pretty! Yeah, they get the awards!
Rishi also looks lovely and his then slim figure did look good in the minis, but the make-up at times does make him look as if he was part of the team of Mera Naam Joker. Oh yeah, I forgot, he was part of Mera Naam Joker! 😉

This is one category that stumps me, I really do not know many songs except the most iconic one suggested by Anu. In fact, I did not know many of the songs you presented, and did not know that so many male actors had appeared in drag. I thought it was just Amitabh who did it, and some other actors like Mehmood. Anyway, one is always learning.
And, for once I do not have a 70’s song to present ;); even though I know you always like my 70’s selections 😉

Kya yaar, leaving me high and dry like that! You were one, who I thought would flood me with (for me) unknown songs with bollywood heroes in drag! 😦
But one lives and learns! 😉
It is okay. But maybe you can come up with one of the other two songs with Dara in Drag.
All the same, you will always remain my encyclopedia for rare Dev songs in the 70s and the expert for Dev fashion and not to forget the geometry and algebra expert for Hindi songs! 🙂

Wait, the only thing I can say is that Vinod khanna looks dashing as usual and RK looks cute in his red kurta lungi. Do you think he borrowed it from Dimple?
Yeah another positive thing: There are no losers at the end, instead they make up and dance together. So that is a peace ehlaan, no?

Offbeat idea for a post, Harvey! Enjoyed reading it, a lot.

Even though I’m not particularly fond of men-in-drag songs, Kajra mohabbatwaala and Aake seedhi lagi are delightful! I love those. 🙂

The one song I was thinking of while I was reading your post was the second one that Anu posted – Aamir Khan dancing to Dole dol dil dole.

Glad you liked it although the category is not after your own taste! 🙂
I also like these songs not only for its song value but also for the acts of the leading men in it. And when Shamshad lends her voice for it, she imparts also a certain standard to it, which doesn’t make it sound vulgar!

I am so sorry that you can’t look at the computer screen for long! I hope this thing gets better soon. I will pray for you. Can’t you promise God that you will do a certain post for him/her/it on the blog or something similar so that he/she/it eliminates your sickness? Something like my 10 favourite nayaa meri paar laga de bhagwan post.

“Am not much of a believer”
You don’t have to be a believer to pray, nor you don’t have to pray to be a believer.
I don’t know if it is done in Kerala. In Mahrashtra there is this tradition of black mailing God. They put the idols in water and threaten God that they will take him out only when the wish goes in fulfillment. There surely is some spiritual idea behind it, but I love the blackmail version more! 🙂

Like Samir, this stumps me. Can’t think of any further songs to add to this.

I love dhadakne lagta hai as well, particularly the scene after this, where he is confronted by his father.
Aamir is a perfectionist! Everything he does, he does it good!

I am very curious to what you are going to come up with!

I cheated actually. You have the picture at the beginning of your post but not the song so I posted it. 😀

The other one is a Johny Walker song where he dresses as a dancer, but not so elaborately. Rather in a badly worn plain sari. The woman whose place he takes is Shyama (IIRC) and actually it’s she who sings for him hiding in the background (never mind that it’s actually Lata/Asha), making it more authentic unlike many dressed in drag singing in female voices.

        >Aamir is a perfectionist! Everything he does, he does it good!
LOL! I?m not an Amir fan, and don’t find him a perfectionist.
It was his pretty looks as a woman that I was admiring.
Somehow, while in other songs a woman is being caricatured (especially Mehmood’s) he isn’t (or the director told him not to, because unlike Mehmood and others it’s not for laughs (I think).

I hope someone will find this Johny Walker song.

The Johnny Walker thing made me real curious and I went in search of it with the clues you gave and here it is: gori gori raat hai from Choo Mantar [1956]

This predates aake sidhi lagi dil pe jaise katariya from Half Ticket by six years, thus the earliest song in this post. Thank you, dear pacifist!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for Aamir, you are right he didn’t make a caricature of the whole thing. But it is fun to see it as a caricature.
You are not an Aamir fan? I just saw the trailer of his film Talaash! Wow, I am looking forward to it!

harvey, Agent Vinod is by Sriram Raghavan – he made Ek Haseena Thi and Johnny Gaddar, both good films, both original – which is saying *a lot*, and both well made. That is why.

Talaash has Rani too – she’s one of my favourite actresses.

How nice of you to remember! It looks like as if everybody there knows that it is a man in drag and also about the playback! Fascinating!
Moreover, the haunting and grief stricken voice of the nightingale! Beautiful!
              Thank you, Richard! 🙂

I know your post is about songs featuring male actors in drag, but how about extending the theme to scenes. Have a look at this scene from Biswajit- Kalpana starrer Biwi Aur Makaan, it was quite a funny film and after watching this scene I am sure you will agree that Biswajit looks pretty convincing as a lady here, I guess his voice has been dubbed by actress Shammi. Keshto Mukherjee too was seen in a saree in this film
Biswajit makes an entry at 47seconds.

Hey Shilpi! Thanks for the videos! Of course you have full license to extend it to men-in-drag scenes as well. I have seen the film. The plot was basically funny and also some scenes, but the whole film as such didn’t have coherence. That is why I didn’t like it much. Biswajeet was good in the bhabhi role. I was wondering, why his voice sounded so naturally female. Thanks to you now I know that it was Shammi! How did you know that?

I think I know, cannot be absolutely sure, actually I am quite familiar with the voices of some of the actors and actresses of the sixties and seventies, so having said that, I think I will change my absolutely not sure to well…. quite sure. Shammi used to also dub for number of actresses from the south who occasionally acted in Hindi films, one of them being Malyalam actress Sharada who acted in a few Hindi films.

I also think it is Shammi’s voice. I recognised it after you told me. I was wondering why it sounded so natural and not a falsetto voice. I didn’t think the obvious! Interesting to know that Shammi also dubbed for actresses from south. It is a pity that such things are not mentioned in the credits. After all they give credit to the playback singers as well.

This was quite a funny film and the masquerade was serious and believable. Keshto Mukherji looks quite good as a woman, and of course so does Biswajeet.

I must admit that Biswajeet has done a fantastic job – can’t believe that he could act so well. 🙂 He’s got the jhatak-mataks down pat. And is actually emoting quite well in these scenes. Maybe I wronged him?

@ pacifist: Because of his slim body and small stature, Keshto makes a very convincing woman. He reminds me of a kaamwali bai (household help), who used to work at our neighbour’s place in Bombay in the 80s.

Very funny Harv. Hehe. Rishi wore plenty make up even when he was not in drag. Or maybe he had naturally red lips.. who knows.

All the funny men, Mehmood, IS Johar, Keshto, Johnny Walker were fabulous in drag. Maybe they didnt need to keep up the image of a ‘hero’ so they could be as crazy as they wanted.

    • harveypam

      January 28, 2012 at 5:17 pm

That is ture one always remembers Rishi’s red lips, doesn’t one? That was his trademark of sorts. I always thought that it was his natural colour. But who knows. Int he 60s every hero worth his salt had this thick pan cake on.
Yeah the comedians were much more bindass in their drag scenes, most probably they didn’t have the huge weight of ‘hero’ to carry. Particularly Mehmood in his drag scenes! He was fabulous. He also seemed to have a major sympathy for the hijra community, see the above scene with Vinod Rajesh and Kunwara Baap. I think they need whatever sympathy, they can get, though I myself was and am very wary of them when in Bombay.

    harveypam ji,

A very interesting collection of drag songs.Well done and congratulations.
Usually-90% times- the purpose of such songs in the films used to be to make the public laugh heartily. There are songs like this in films since a long time.
For the benefit of the readers,I would like to mention an unique song, featuring Kishore Kumar and Chand Usmani in film BAAP RE BAAP in 1955.
Unique in the way that Kishore kumar was a playback singer himself, but he received playback from Rafi in as many as 6 songs, but in this song he gets playback from ASHA BHOSLE.
The song is ‘ jaane bhi de,chhod ye bahaana….’
The song and the picturisation is very funny and one can not stop laughing.
It surely is worth featuring here.

    Thanks for your kind words!
Wow the song jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaana… is wonderful! After you suggested it and I had a look on you tube, the song sounded familiar to me. I had seen it some months back, but I had totally forgotten it. It is interesting in the fact, that it does feature Kishore in a sari but not at all pretending as a woman. So I don’t know if it counts as a drag. But who cares it is funny and KK’s moves and jumps and facial expressions are a hoot! ROTFL!!!
Thank you very, very much for reminding me of this song!
The visitors to this blog will surely love it too.
So, till now this is the earliest song in the list. KK pushes Johnny Walker to come to the first position again!
Wonder if more men-in-drag songs will come in, which pre-date this one.

Very entertaining post! I enjoyed seeing all these men-in-drag songs and had no idea there were so many! Hilarious. 🙂 My favorite would have to be the Choo Mantar one, probably because it’s the oldest. 🙂 I also have to add the male version of “Choli Ke Peeche” from Khal Nayak which is from a much later Hindi film and doesn’t have men in true “drag” but gets me everytime when Sanjay Dutt tries to mimic Madhuri’s signature leg swings. 🙂

Welcome to my blog, Minai! I am glad that you liked the post. It is so funny to see men imitating women and do a sort of parody of it. Particularly the jhatkas and mataks! Some just can’t do it.
Arunkumar Deshmukh has posted a song earlier than the one from Choo Mantar. It is a song from Baap re Baap (1955): jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaana…. It has Kishore kumar up to his old pranks and jumping around and making a nuisance of himself. Hilarious!

Thanks for the male version of choli ke peechhe kya hai. Didn’t know it. Sanjay Dutt dancing to Madhuri’s moves IS funny! I like particularly the moves by the side-kicks.

Thank you, Chris for this hilarious song! ROTFL!
I could never imagine Pran in drag. He does it real fine!! And so typical of the 70s it also ends with a call for family planning and having only one child.
Now, I am real curious which this song is where Pran wears a white sari and from early 70s!

Yeah there was a Mrs Doubtfire remake in Hindi – Chachi 420. It also has a nice song from the pen of Gulzar, describing the stress the main character has to go through while leading a double life.
The song is dauda dauda bhaga bhaga sa. I had considered it for my list but since Kamalhassan doesn’t really mouth the song, I didn’t take it in. Here it is:

Harvey, sorry I am so late to this very fun post… Not only can I say I have been busy but, also, my computer broke down and was held for a while for repair under the warranty. (So anything you saw by me online for the two weeks before yesterday was on borrowed computers and borrowed time. 🙂 ) Anyway, thank you very much for the comment about my “profound knowledge.” I have, indeed, seen clips of Mumtaz Ali dancing in drag in the 1940s. Now I just have to find out where. But I will get back to it. Also, there is a nice Pakistani film drag scene that I have actually posted in other places. (And chances are very likely that the vocalist was Noor Jehan 🙂 .) Hopefully, I will get back to you on both of these things soon.

I am so happy to read that you have indeed seen Mumtaz Ali dancing in drag. I was going thorugh Mehmood’s biography few days back and what I read about him in that sounded very fascinating and tragic. His living together with a man, whom he didn’t tell that he had got married and their life-long friendship…
I would be very happy if you could find those videos of him again. I will search for them myself again. Do you remember the names of the films by any chance?

You say there is Pakistani men in drag song as well and sung by Noorjehan? Wow! Looking forward to it!

Here is one of Sheikh Mukhtar in drag, and Kishore Kumar sings to him:

(suno jana suno jana mere pehloos e mat jaana: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7mPDpSsJ2A)

This is from 1965, so the one from Chhoo Mantar is still the earliest. There is another one of Kishore Kumar, where he sings in both the male and female roles, and acts both roles himself, The song talks of how girls need cosmetics and the latest fashions, but I cannot remember the song for the life of me. It will probably come to me at some odd moment, like the one above, which came when I was driving back from the nursing home tonight. I even have the song on one of my VHS tapes, which I cannot view any more, because I don’t have a VCR any more! Does any one know this song that I am talking about?

After I searched under ‘Kishore Kumar singing on fashion’, I found this song at Atul’s site. The song is is duniya me pyaare from Shrimanji (1968), but neither does he sing in a female voice nor dons female clothes, that is why I am not sure if this is the one, which you meant. But there is a junior artiste in drag playing Heer.

The song is a good satire on the consumerist society.

It is a nice song, but the one I am talking about is a stage song, with Kishore kumar painting one side of his face to look like a girl, and he walks from one side to the other, then when he turns, he is a man again, and I think the girl is waiting to see him in a restaurant (I could be wrong here!). That man was so versatile, he deserved world wide recognition, and it is a pity that Hollywood didn’t know about this talented man. I love the way he sings and dances and struts about in the song you have posted, and then goes about sprinkling talcum powder, talking about the necessity of fashion! Don’t worry, I will keep looking and post it when I find it!

KK was really very versatile! Good that Hollywood didn’t recognsie his talent. This way we had him only for ourselves! 🙂 If he had gone to Hollwood, we would not have got good songs like chingari koi bhadke and yeh sham mastani or nadiya se dariya! Their loss is our gain!
Iam sure KK did that with the talcum powder spontaneously. Did you se ehow the juniour artiste was surprised with that move?

only the other day,one reader had suggested that I publish a book of the 300 old, obscure and less known films, the details (story, cast, stories behind their making, anecdotes etc) of which I have given in Atul ji’s blog so far, spreading the over 200 other comments which I have written, on diff. film related topics, in between them.

I don’t understand Telugu, but it looks as if the film is based on similar lines like Biwi Aur Makaan, where four bachelors are searching for a flat in Hyderabad and have to disguise themselves as a family.
      Funny!
      Thank you Michele!
The drag sequence begins at 09.00

Related. There seems to be a case of aman playing a woman’s role. From
    http://dawn.com/2012/06/06/must-twice-be-as-nice/
“…in 1917, Anna Salunkhe ended up played the first double-role in Indian films. No, this wasn’t the tale of good brother/bad brother, or the meek one saved by the braver. Salunkhe actually set the bar very high by playing both the roles of Ram and Seeta in Lanka Dahan (1917). “

That is an interesting anecdote, gaddeswarup!

I do not know whether this qualifies. But in “Jaane bhi do yaaro” you can see the entire male cast (including Nasiruddin Shah, Satish Shah, Om Puri, Satish Kaushik, Pankaj Kapoor, and others) in “burqua” (veil) (from 4:50 onward in this video)

The Mahabharat scene from the movie is particularly interesting with Satish Shah draped as Draupadi (and later as Anarkali as the backdrop changes):

      @ thinku, thanks for response
actually in the climax of the movie there are two thief (thieves) who enter into that girls hostel, but finally they got caught.

i am not sure about harish, but not rajendraprasad, it is confirmed.

there were scenes, like harish changes his dress and convert into beautiful girl in a lonely road.

    • mhalder

      September 29, 2014 at 4:34 pm

i dont know the total starcast
but i can tell a part of storyline.
the hero(most probably harish kumar) lived in a ladies hostel in disguise of girl.
he used to change his dress in a lonely lane. one day two thief/ bad men saw that harish is changing dress and becoming a girl. then they two took lady-getup and enter into that hostel. but at the climax the two theif are got caught.
lady get-up is a very old trick in indian cinema. but all the male actors could not potray as reall lady. according to me the perfectionists are 1. Prashanth in anazhagan 2. naresh in cbv 3. harish in raavanraaj & oho na pellanta 4. kamal hassan in c420 5. saaraan in smt. jayalalitha

EAGERLY WAITING FOR THE ABOVE MENTIONED TELUGU MOVIE (HARISH IN LADY GETUP)
