Insomnia

06 Mar

My ten favourite insomnia songs

neend na aaye titleSpending the night in bed tossing around has happened to each and everybody of us. One would like to sleep, but the stream of thoughts just don’t end. The body is tired, but the mind wide awake. You tell yourself, that you have so many things to do the next day and the most appropriate thing to do now would be to sleep. You get irritated over it, which make matters only worse. And then in the wee hours of the morning, when you are supposed to be soon getting up, you fall asleep in sweet, sweet slumber! A dear friend of mine, Raja, was in this situation a few days back. This unfortunate incident made me come up with this list.

But the songs below don’t sing about the situation described above, but are rather moans of separated lovers or are freshly-fallen-in-love pairs. For this list, I have chosen songs with neend(iyaa) na aaye in the mukhdaa (refrain). I hope you like them as much as I do.

1. bairan nindiya kyun nahin aayi – Pujaari [1946]
MD: Hansraj Bahl; Lyrics: Wali Sahab; Singer: Amirbai Karnataki
bairan nindiya kyun nahin aaye
She very well knows why dear sleep won’t come to her. Her beloved is between her eyelids and doesn’t let the sleep enter her eyes. Her baalam must surely give Tom Thumb a run for his money.
Amirbai Karnataki lets one forget all such silly thoughts though!

2. beimaan tore nainawaa neendiya na aayeTarana [1951]
MD: Anil Biswas; Lyrics: D. N. Madhok; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Tarana beimaan tore nainwa madhubala
Another song, where I feel like a voyeur. Such an intimacy between these two actors (supposedly lovers at that time) let sone forget that they are acting. Madhubala looks stunningly beautiful here. These eyes, this smile, simply enchanting! No wonder, Dilip can’t sleep!
In contrast to other songs in the list, she is not singing of herself being sleepless, but that her lover’s eyes are dishonest, thus unworthy of sleep.

3. tum bin piya nindiya na aaye – Dhun [1953]
MD: Madan Mohan; Lyrics: Kaifi Irani; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Dhun
If one has her beloved in between her eyelids and the other in front of her, the lady in question here is pining away in separation from her lover. As often in such cases, she recites the list of her symptoms. These include running eyes (maybe even the nose, but she abstains from mentioning it), burning sensation and lethargy. But she doesn’t need a doctor, she only wants him! Bharat Upadhyay commented at Atul’s blog that this song was not filmed at all or at least didn’t appear in the film. That makes two songs in this list, which didn’t make to the last cut.

4. saajan bin neend na aaveMunimji [1955]
MD: S. D. Burman; Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Munimji ghayal hiraniya NaliniIt seems the list of songs to discover songs of Munimji are endless. Did SDB compose for two films? Or did he think so highly of Munimji script that he was sure of a sequel and he thought lage haath he might as well compose for the sequel as well. Bless him and his soul, he surely did it well. This song was not included in the film, maybe not even filmed.
As for the lyrics, the same symptoms as above, but the patient is not earnest about it.

5. so gaya saara zamanaMiss Mary [1957]
MD: Hemant Kumar; Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Miss Mary so gaya saara zamana Meena KumariAnother sleeples lady, but I don’t think she is missing somebody other than her sleep. This is a clear case of being moonstruck. I just can’t imagine that she would be pining away for Gemini Ganeshan. But there is no accounting for tastes, he married thrice.

6. o neend na mujhko aaye – Post Box 999 [1958]
MD: Kalyanji-Anandji; Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan; Singers: Hemant Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar
Post Box 999 neend na mujhko aaye ShakilaFor me this is THE sleepless song! It is sort of a synonym for insomnia. It must be Hemant and Lata’s rendition or K-A’s music.
The lyrics though don’t give much stuff to ooh and aah! The refrain itself wants to make you believe that they are in love with an ogre, thus frightful of him/her. Then in the stanzas it just goes on about “I here” and “you there” “doing something something”. Which reminds me of this.
But all the same ethereal stuff!

7. saari saari raat teri yaad sataye – Aji Bas Shukriya [1958]
MD: Roshan; Lyrics: Faroque Kaiser; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Aji bas shukriya saari saar raat teri Geeta BaliMany people are of the opinion that she is missing her favourite sari, which has made her sleepless. The reason given to support his hypothesis is that otherwise it would mean Pradeep Kumar is the object of her passion. We might not understand such feelings, but as I have said before, there is no accounting for tastes.

8. bairan neend na aaye mohe – Chachaa Zindabad [1959]
MD: Madan Mohan; Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Chacha Zindabad bairan neend na aaye Anita GuhaAs a child, I thought that she is singing of Bahrian quality sleep. I heard this song in the 70s, where there wa the great rush to the Gulf countries, Bahrain (pronounced in my vicinity like barren) being one of them. And anything phoren was very special. So my innocent mind thought that even the sleep experienced on phoren shores must be special. Thank God, this misunderstanding didn’t last long. Otherwise the deep conflict in my heart, which was fired by Gandhiji’s swadeshi movement and this sweet song by Lata, would have torn me apart! 😉

9. raina beeti jaayeAmar Prem [1972]
MD: R. D. Burman; Lyrics: Anand Bakshi; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Amar Prem raina beeti jaaye SharmilaA word-play with shaam (evening) and Shyam (Krishna) describing sleepless nights. This time the symptoms are burning sensation and thirst. Acute insomnia. A chamomile infusion or a sesame oil on the eyelids would help but that would be for people who would be ready to take the remedy.

10. jaane kyaa baat hai – Sunny [1984]
MD: R. D. Burman; Lyrics: Anand Bakshi; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Sunny jaane kya baat hai Amrita SinghShe doesn’t show any such symptoms like seen till now in all the maidens above. She seems to be rather day-dreaming and fantasising of her marriage. Anticipation of times to come can leave one sleepless as well.
Thanks to Prakashji, I know now that there is an extra stanza to this song, which has been cut in the film. Here is the full song.

If this post has not put you to sleep already, maybe you would like to tell me about your favourite insomnia songs. As usual you don’t have to abide by my rules.

Enjoy the playlist.

There are so many reasons for not getting sleep, viz. love, fear, anxiety, expectancy, excitement etc and likewise there could be so many kinds of “neend” na aaye songs, viz.

Mohe haaye neend na aaye (Duhaayee)(1943)

Ae dil tujhi to neend na aayee tamaam raat (Shehmaaz)(1948)

Jin raaton mein neend ud jaati hai (Raat Ki Raani ) (1949)

Song-Na tum aaye na neend aayi (Rimjhim)(1949)

Meri aankhon ki neend le gaya (Madhosh)(1951)

Mohe ratiyaa neend na aaye (Damaad)(1951)

Neend nigaahon ki kho jaati hai (Lutera)(1965)

Neend kabhi rahti thhi aankhon mein (Aasra)(1966)

    Neend churaaye chain churaaye (Anuraag)(1973)

As it is, I have not been able to sleep at night for a different reason altogether. My dogs feel the urge to bark late at night and wake me up. I am feeling sleepy as of now as a result, whereas my dogs are happily asleep at home right now.

To paraphrase the last song, I could tell my dogs “Neend churaaye chain churaaye daaka daale teri barking”.

Thanks for this bouquet of songs, dear Atul! poora geeton ka khazana
I had considered mohe hai neend na aye but it made palce for others. Who is the singer of that song?
How did you find the video of the song ae dil tujhi ko neend na aayi tamam raat? Lovely song that!
jin raaton me neend ud jaati hai was a totally new song for me. Heard it for the first time. Wonderful song!
It was so nice to listen to na tum aaye na neend aayi after so many years! Pure nostalgia!
meri aankhon ki neend le gaya is also the first time for my ears! Usha Kiron looks so young in it. Barely a child! She msut have been 15 or so! Wonder who is that smoker?
Re.: mohe ratiyan neend na aaye. Cuckoo could dance up a storm, eh? Who is the singer? Sulochana Kadam?
I am always surprised to see the wonderful score L-P gave for Lootera! Amazing! Lovely!
The same is true for for neend kabhi rehti thi aankhon me from Aasra!
neend churaye chain churaye always reminds me of my primary school, where we had to make hand motions to the poems!

Dogs barking is surely no lullaby! And it is no consolation to know that they are your dogs!
      maybe you should sing:
      Bhole jaa re
      jaa re jaa re
      tera bhaunkna
      tu kahin aur gaa

Hope you have more peaceful slumber the coming night!

Yes, Gayatri, I don’t know why wordpress does that to you. I have to “approve” your comments everytime, before they appear here. Very cumbersome! I hope it goes away with time. Just comment, they don’t get lost!

Hey, Harvey, how about these three:

Neend churaye, chain churaye daka daale teri bansi…
and Neend na aaye tujhe chainse sone wale…. (did not get youtube linked for the 2nd and 3rd.-perhaps net problem.)

I actually fell asleep at a decent time, then I woke up and decided to go online briefly, and now I am awake watching and listening to all these fine songs! But IMO, the greatest insomnia song is across the northern border (and speaking of being moonstruck…):

This waking up in the middle of the night and listening to Noorjehan songs is a sure sign of Noorjehanitis. Be careful! Very infectious!
I think you have infected me with it.
Thanks for this lovely song, Richard! Pure bliss! It is always nice to hear good news and good songs from Pakistan!

Neend na mujhko aaye is the first song that comes to mind at the same time as insomnia.
I had actually also thought of the Tarana song, and agree with whatever you’ve written about it. They were both so gorgeous. Dilip Kumar – ummmm.
The Munimji song is so beautifully classic. Heard it the first time. I didn’t know there are so many Muniumji songs.
Re. Gemini Ganeshan. Nightmares are more in order there.
I like the Amirbai Karnataki song, and bairan neend na aaye.

    Well Done Harvey!!!! 🙂

The only songs I can think of about neend are the ones inviting need, lullabys to be precise, with babies and little children which isn’t the topic :-/
but will come back and post as soon as one enters my head.

Thanks for the appreciation, dear pacifist!
Dilip Kumar, eh? Your wish is my command!

You are right the topic is not of asking sleep to come but the bemoaning of the fact that she is not here! You understand the subtlety quite well!

Oh, good one, Harvey! I saw your status message on FB, and thought, “I’ll read the post tomorrow” (since I always reserve most of my surfing for the morning). But then I couldn’t resist coming and having a look – and find some songs that I’d never heard before (the ones from Pujaari, Dhun, Chacha Zindabad and Munimji – loved that last one, I thought it was really good). And I laughed my head off at your comments. Especially that bit about there’s “no accounting for tastes“.

I don’t have a song to suggest that complies with your stipulation for the refrain to include that bit about “neend na aaye, but here’s a lovely song from Amrapali, which does talk about how the missing lover has taken away with him his sweetheart’s sleep. 🙂

I was trying to post a better picture version. It must have been a playlist, and that other song came up. This one is a bit stretched.
I didn’t know that was Rajender Kumar. The thought that this actor looked good did occur to me though 😉
Didn’t know that Rajender Kumar acted in Jogan either.

      March 6, 2013 at 12:55 pm

Yes he plays Dilip Kumar’s friend in that film, who seeing his infatuation with the Jogan tries to make him realise his mistake by taking him to a nachnewali. Strange are the ways…!
Yeah, I don’t know why they have tried to make it look like cinemascope!
      Love the line:
“The thought that this actor looked good did occur to me though ;-)”
      😀

I’d left a comment earlier but it seems to have gone to sleep. 😉

Let’s start by saying it’s a good thing that my insomnia was at least of SOME use – it helped produce this lovely post.

As usual, your intros to songs are the highlight of your post. From Tom Thumb to Gemini Ganesan and more – good fun!!!

Lots of songs have already been suggested – but using Madhu’s logic, I’m going to suggest a couple of songs that don’t say loss-of-neend explicitly but suggest it implcitly.

Yaad mein teri jaag jaag ke hum…raat bhar karvatein badalte hain (Mere Mehboob)
Karvatein badalte rahe…saari raat hum…aap ki kasam (Aap Ki Kasam).

And then there’s “Ki gal hai…koi nahin…teri aankhon se lagta hai ki tu kal raat ko soyi nahin”…another steal from Samir. 🙂

Thanks, Harvey. Thoroughly enjoyed your post. As always.

I searched for the lost comment high and low and even in the spam folder, but the comment is gum!
      Sorry for that!

yaad me teri jaag jaag from mere Mehboob does describe the situation very well and the same tossing around in the bed is in a happy mood. Did I tell you of the time when I thought that karvatein badalna meant changing nappies? It so happened that an aunt of mine had delivered a baby around the time, when I heard the song from Aap Ki Kasam for the first time. And my aunt would complain that she had to change the baby’s nappies so often at night. I added 2 and 2 and came up with 50.

      Here is to karvatein badalna!

Bechara Samir, even this song gone!

I remember singing this song with my cousins as eagle hai… koi nahin

Thanks for the appreciation, dear Raja!

It is so Samir, that with your association with 70s Dev songs, your charm has rubbed off on them, making them attractive for others!
Thus people fishing in your pond of songs, is really a compliment for you!
BTW, since when have you started roaring like Dharam?

I absolutely agree with everyone the topic is great and the choice of songs excellent. BUT tell me something can you read my mind or something? You or Madhu won’t believe this but after your last post I was thinking of putting up a request in Pagle Kahin Ke – it was to be meant for you and Madhu – the request was for songs to do with raat, though I did not think of sleepless nights but that sort of follows when anyone is going to stay up at night and sing.
Now that you have unwittingly fulfilled my request I am= like Samir says – faced with cut throat competiton from your readers. I have 2 songs in mind though they do not explicitly talk about loss of sleep, it is implied in the lyrics.
The first song is from Parichay

and the other song is from Annadata— Shilpi

Oh it was your message, which reached my mind? I was wondering from whom it was! Yeah you can surely beam your thoughts to me! And very successfully at that! I have completed the sleepless night part. Maybe Madhu will do the sleepy nights part. 🙂
      Love both of the songs!
Both with Jaya! Did you know her? She must have surely acted with your dad in one or two films.
      An amazing natural actress!

Sleepy nights? Offhand, I can’t think of a single song that talks about feeling sleepy. Though here’s a song that actually wishes insomnia on the loved one. Not a song I particularly like, but still. 🙂

You are right, DO, people complaining of sleepy nights whielsinging is indeed very rare in Hindi films.
Everytime I’d to study for exams I used to complain about being too sleeps to learn, but such situations are rare in Hindi films.
One song I do remember now of being sleepy and somebody not allowing this person to sleep is:
na soyenge na sone denge from Mr. Romeo

Here is one from Chhota Bhai

Achcha, let me fall back upon a song that I really do not like, but I think it fits your theme:

    What about this one?

And just to pay Samir back:

      Anu, insomnia’s favourite victim!
I hope it is not stressful for you to listen to these songs. No it isn’t otherwise you wouldn’t have posted such wonderful songs of this malady! 😉

diya jale sari raina neendiya na aaye, was exactly the 11th song on my list. L-P gave such a wonderful song isn’t it?
L-P gave good music in the 60s which has been largely forgotten.

sajan tum so jao is more of a lullaby isn’t it? and so is ahista ahista neendiya tu aaja re.

ram kare aisa ho jaaye is one of my fav Mukesh songs. That list is not long!

nice to see Kajol and Juhi in neend churayi meri tune. Awful product of the 90s, na?

kaahe sataye kaahe rulaye does have neend na aaye in it, thus should qualify for the list.

      Splendid songs Anu, thanks!

Beautiful songs Harvey. All my favorites are there. One or two that were left out have come up in the comments.

Another way of looking at insomnia in songs is when the poet doesn’t refer specifically to sleep or lack of it, but laments how hard it is to pass the night and craves for solace: Naina barse rimjhim – http://youtu.be/AcpkrJG9cu8

I hope you won’t mind my adding a semi-classical piece here – ‘Kate naa birhaa ki rain’ by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan: http://youtu.be/JXTUTP_z6ck

    • Subodh Agrawal

      March 7, 2013 at 12:08 pm

I realise ‘Naina Barse’ doesn’t quite fit into this theme. I had seen the film quite some time back and probably confused the setting of the song with the likes of ‘Kahin deep jale kahin dil’. Let me make up for this by mentioning a song that does fit the bill: ‘Raat raat bhar jaag jaag kar’ http://youtu.be/ZIJHOk3fIfI

      • harveypam

        March 7, 2013 at 9:53 pm

naina barse rhim jhim rhim jhim surely doens’t fit here.
But raat raat bhar jaag jaag kar surely does! Very melodious song! I heard it for the first time today. Thanks for introducing me to it, Subodh!

I would start reading the post late in the evening or afternoon, but could not go to sleep early because the beauty of the subject and melody and variety of songs being added would keep on scratching the memory for more and more of such songs.
Here is what I have to add:

Aaj Ki Rat Ye Kaisi Raat, ke Humko Need Nahin Aati – Aman- Shanker Jaikishna – Mohammad Rafi – http://youtu.be/LOYD8TH8y7M

Aaj Ki Raat Badi Shaukh BAdi Natkhat Hai – Nai Umar Ki Nayee Fasal – Roshan – Mohammad Rafi – Asha Bhosle – http://youtu.be/qH5EA-CONP8

    A few more recent films:

    Jaane Kya Baat Hai – Sunny – R D Burman – Lata Mangeshkar – http://youtu.be/YFXtXvkwXXQ

Raat Ko Neend Nahin Aati – Judaai – Amit Kumar and Priya – http://youtu.be/c_qAcieg5qI

    Nend AAti Nahin – Vijeta – 1996- Abhijeet , Purnima – http://youtu.be/JefvM5GbojI

Songs that do not have words – Neend Nahi Aati Hai, but do relate to insomnia –

Main Har Raat Jaagi Ke Ek Bar Shayad Muhabbat Idhar Kidhar Yaad Aye – Gaban – Shanker Jaikishan – Lata Mangeshkar – http://youtu.be/u24MxQSt-PQ ( It is the full day that is difficult to pass, so we assume that night must be also sleepless)

Tum Bin Sajan Barse Nayan – Gaban – Shanker Jaikishan – Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi – http://youtu.be/nwBvPQln1ik

Main Yahan Tu Wahan – Baghban – Alka Yagnik, Amitabh Bachchan – http://youtu.be/8DR7ylX46yg

    And some Ghazals –

    Neend Aati Nahin – http://youtu.be/Pdxb1pAsMpQ

Koi Ummeed Bar Nahi Aati Koi Surat Nazar Nahi Aati…Neend Kyun Raat Bar Nahi Aati… A Ghazal by Mirza Ghalib set to Raga Bageshri. -Sung by Radhika Chopra. Intro by Ustad Shujaat Khan. – http://youtu.be/PhOxDq4ZHfo

I was wondering why nobody posted aaj ki raat yeh kaisi raat as yet. Thanks for doing it!
aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai is one of my fav songs and I am still sad, that I didn’t include it in the list above.

I think the Sunny song must have mistakenly slipped in.
The post-90s songs and the ghazals were all new for me! Wow! Quite a discovery!

The song from Gaban main har raat jaagi was also new for me, the other one, tum bin sajan barse nayan was known though.

Well that is what the ‘freakonomics’ is all about.
Listening to “insomnia” songs should crave for deep sleep ( as happens when you sit against a ‘typical’ sop opera on the ‘idiot box’] or keep you awake, craving for either more songs or endless rewinding what you listened?
Questions to be settled are – What are the intended effects? and, What are the unintended effects?’
        (LOL!!)

“Intended effects and unintended effects of Hindi film songs, particularly dealing with insomnia – A study”
could be a really good title of a doctoral thesis. You should give it a thought Ashok!
Then we can soon call you Dr. Ashok.
mariz ki tabiyat din-ba-din bigadti jaa rahi hai, aap ka kya khayal hai Dr. Ashok
and then you can say the famous lines
abhi mariz ko dava ki nahin dua ki zaroorat hai

          ROTFL

I really like mere neendon me tum, but I jsut can’t see how it would fit here, dear Chris! For all we know he/she must be sleeping tight with her/him snug in their slumber. 😉

woh meri neend mera chain mujhe lauta do has already been contributed by Ashok. It was new for me. You know I’m totally lost in the 90s jungle.

aa ri aa jaa is more of a lullaby, isn’t it? It doesn’t say much about sleeplessness. But a wonderful song all the same. It featured in my lullaby list.

The “blue mood” in both the songs below is true to the theme, but the latter’s sufi/quawaali style rendition is perhaps musically closer to Rafi’s “Jin raton main neend ud jati hai” (posted above by Atulji and Lomo) and Asha’s “Sakia aaj mujhe neend nahin aayegi” (posted by Pacifist), I think.

Meri ankhon se koi nind liye jata hai (Pooja ke phool, 1964; Madanmohan)
