Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol… (Raise the veil and behold…)

13 Jul

My ten favourite hindi film bhajans

Hindi film bhajans are not my cup of tea. They are mostly preachy and weepy, and in worst cases, also very demanding. God give me this and god give me that, as if God is a servant to be ordered around. 😉 That is why I thought this will be any easy list to make. In fact dustedoff and I spoke about it some 2-3 years back.
While collecting songs for this list I did find some soulful music going with some good bhajans with content.
So as to boil the list down to 10, I had to make some rules. Well, in fact only one rule that the songs/bhajans must be sung by person(s) sitting/standing in front of an idol of a god or goddess (or something equivalent). Songs of wandering monks, ascetics or mendicants will constitute a separate list.

So, here is my list of 10 favourite Hindi film bhajans

1. Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol Re – Jogan (1950)
MD: Bulo C. Rani; Lyrics: Meerabai; Singer: Geeta Dutt

Nargis enacts the role of jogan (a female ascetic), who falls in love with Dilip Kumar. The Meerabai bhajan, asking one to renounce the worldly pleasures to get a glimpse of god, seems to be lost in her. Geeta Dutt manages to convey this message eloquently, though it is in sharp contrast to Nargis’ acting, who by fervent repetition of the bhajan lines hopes to suppress her feelings and passion.
Ghunghat ke pat khol re (Raise the veil) plays on the theme of bridal night. The bride is asked to raise her veil, so she can see her beloved. Meerabai turns it around and asks to raise the veil of maya and see everybody as one.

2. Hari Om…, Man TarasatBaiju Bawra (1952)
MD: Naushad; Lyrics: Shakeel ; Singer: Mohd. Rafi

What a voice! What a composition! What lyrics! A sublime combination of three great talents! Three Muslims composing a Hindu-bhajan! But such a novelty as it is made out to be, it isn’t. In the Sufi tradition, the spiritual-master is often lauded in songs. Baiju sings for a vision of Hari, but here the Hari is not Krishna but his guru Swami Haridas. The pleadings for a vision in most bhajans are also often misunderstood as a wish for a physical vision, which in fact is for a divine realisation.

3. Tu Pyaar ka Saagar HaiSeema (1955)
MD: Shanakar-Jaikishan; Lyrics: Shailendra ; Singer: Manna Dey

Amazing song, sung serenely by Manna Dey (Lately, I am re-discovering many songs of his!). The serenity of the bhajan is matched by Balraj Sahni’s facial expression. Such a gentle and kind look, incorporating the message of Love is God and God is Love. An often to be heard phrase in so many religions, but unfortunately often forgotten at crucial points in history. But on the other hand maybe we just notice the cases when it failed rather than the most daily cases when it successful.

4. Naa Me Dhan ChahuKala Bazaar (1960)
MD: S. D. Burman; Lyrics: Shailendra ; Singer: Geeta Dutt & Sudha Malhotra

Leela Chitnis again playing a sick mother with her trademark shawl around her. Poor thing always damned to play the sick, consumptive mother! But this duet with Geeta Dutt and Sudha Malhotra is so sweet! And what I like about this song is also the picturisation. The horizontal and transversal lines of the staircase make up a nice maze in which Dev is shown to be trapped. I don’t know why, but when I listen to this I always have to think of Rita Mae Brown’s quote “Lead me not into temptation; I can find the way myself.”

5. Hey Ram Hamare RamchandraGuide (1965)
MD: S. D. Burman; Lyrics: Shailendra ; Singer: Manna Dey

This was well before a political party turned Ram into a bad word. Ram of Ayodhya is scientifically at least, a comparatively recent phenomenon. But the word Ram is, said by some, even pre-vedic. No wonder, that the chant has such an aura to it. Raju, the guide, in his penance gets the vision of the divine and the realisation of his identification with the universal self. What dies is his ego (and his desires and aversions), leaving him pure and one.
Few years back I during a meditation course I participated in a ‘Ram’-chant. It was eerie and at the same time purifying.

6. Tora Mann Darpan Kehlaye – Kaajal (1965)
MD: Ravi; Lyrics: Sahir ; Singer: Asha Bhosle

A Sahir bhajan! And it can only be deep philosophical one. Here the mind is called the mirror and the witness to everything in life. I think Sahir used the word man (mind) instead of self, because it would create confusion for the listeners. Deep, profound, beautiful!

7. Sooraj Ki Garmi Se Jalte – Parinay (1974)
MD: Jaidev; Lyrics: Ramanand Sharma; Singer: Sharma brothers

A male quartet! Quite a rare appearance in Hindi film songs. I haven’t heard any other bhajans from Sharma brothers, but like this a lot. I can still remember when I saw this song on DD at the age of 12 or so. Neither did I know what they were singing nor did I understand it, but I was fascinated. I was transfixed.

8. Saancha Naam TeraJulie (1975)
MD: Rajesh Roshan; Lyrics: Anand Bakshi; Singer: Asha Bhosle & Usha Mangeshkar

I took this one because it has such a good melody and for the fact that Asha and Usha’s voices blend so good together.

9. Saanware sunawo bansuriBaseraa [1981]
MD: R. D. Burman; Lyrics: Gulzar; Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

No list of mine is complete without a Pancham song. Lyrics by Gulzar here aren’t one of the complex ones with empty vessel night and such. Straight simple lyrics with a soothing melody, which caresses the heart and soul. The way Lata sings ‘Brindavani radha banu,..’, the scent of the flowers of Brindavan wafts through!
Forget the video, just listen to the song!

10. Pal Pal Hai BhariSwades (2004)
MD: A. R. Rahman; Lyrics: Javed Akthar; Singers: Madhushree and Vijay Prakash

Okay this is not a bhajan in the strictest sense. The beginning part is made up of much Sitagiri. I took it in because I like the concluding lines so much. Raavan and Ram are not somewhere outside. Both of them abide in one’s own self. Ram is the divine part of self, Raavan the ego. Remove Raavan and you have Ram with you!! Lovely!

So, which are your favourite bhajans. And as usual my rules don’t apply to you!

    Hi Harvey,
Great list!! Some offbeat ones I must admit

My favourite bhajans have been and will always be

(prabhu tero naam from Hum Dono: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKpMlBV3KOs)
    and

(darshan do ghanshyamnath from Narsinh Mehta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UYtyMXwEuo)

I had considered this one for the list, because I like it a lot. But since the time this bhajan been used in Slumdog Millionaire. I just can’t watch it without being reminded of the scene.you know which one I mean.

This is the bhajan that is what I think of whenever I praise the soulful music of bhajans. I don’t even know what word I should use to show my liking of it. Somehow it seems so inadequate to say ‘I love this bhajan’.
This is the second song that I absolutely adore that you have mentioned Karthik. Thanks.

The problem is…how do I stop myself from posting bhajan after bhajan here.
Well, at least let me make a start with this song from gharana.
Lovely music. The flute is heavenly.

Didn’t know this one. A nice bhajan as a male-female duet! Love how the children eye the prasad. Reminds me of the aartis at home. But, no my mum didn’t have the jewellry like the lady in the film. Who is she, BTW?

Just bring in all your bhajans! I’m sure there are more which I don’t know!

The lady singing the bhajan is Devika(famous actress down south)(She also acted in IZZAT alongwith Dharmendra,Jayalalita and Tanuja)and the elderly man is Bipin gupta. The name of two child artists are Moppet raja and Master sandeep

I was thinking of taking songs from Gulzar’s Meera as well, but am completely spoiled after listening to Lata and Hridaynath’s album of Meera bhajans. I like Vani Jairam, but particularly in this bhajan, somehow for my ears I have a feeling something is amiss.
      How about this one:

Good work with the list. I’ve always liked ‘Suraj ki garmi se’. It’s got such a different beat from most bhajans, and the power of a male quartet. 🙂

I also like the bhajan at school assembly in ‘Guddi’. The shots of the restless schoolgirls, the strict principal, how much like school, and despite it all, the sweetness of the bhajan.

Yesterday, I could experience the Suraj ki garmi and tapta tan here and no chhaayaa! I had completely forgotten about this morning prayer from Guddi. In my school we didn’t have the big assembly but in the classroom where we shot out the prayer like bullets from a gun! And then the national anthem! That was sung as if we are going for a war. I think if that was the case the enemy would have closed their ears and run away.
Thanks for reminding me of this song. Love Jaya in it!

Another very nice list, Harvey. I also especially like that Kaajal bhajan…

And I have to say, I love Sunheriyaadein’s list too. Of course, my favorite is “Tu Hai Mera Prem Devata.”

And here are some others that I’ve noticed.

    From Meera (1947):

      Thanks Richard!
I didn’t include any bhajans form Subbulakshmi’s Meera, because I was sure you would contribute it! 😉 And was hoping you would bring in Sandhya’s Jo tum todo piya.
How could I, how could I miss Tora manwa kyu ghabrye re!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From the sound of it I thought it is a mendicant song. This will teach me to check the videos before I put the songs on a list
The Jhuthika Roy bhajan is great! Love her voice!

Harvey, I’d read your post earlier this morning, but had to rush off soon after on an errand that’s taken up most of the day. I like your list a lot (the only one I don’t like much – even though I’ve heard it loads of times – is Suraj ki garmi se. I don’t know quite why; the lyrics are good, but it just sounds too much like all those jaagran troupes who keep singing at our neighbourhood temple when we’re trying desperately to sleep!)

Anyway, here are a couple of suggestions from me. They don’t quite comply with your rules, but I do like them as examples of ‘songs addressed to God’:

Teri hai zameen tera aasmaan, from The Burning Train:
(I like the secularism of this song – it’s a lovely way of showing how people, across all barriers of caste, creed, etc, come together in times of trouble)

And this one, again not religion-specific:
Humko mann ki shakti dena, from Guddi:

Aaj sajan mohe ang lagaa lo from Pyaasa is also a bhajan:

“but it just sounds too much like all those jaagran troupes who keep singing at our neighbourhood temple when we’re trying desperately to sleep!”

I understand you perfectly. I think if someone were singing bhajans, while I am trying to sleep, I’ll be put off of bhajans for whole life! They must be something like the troupes in the local trains in Bombay.

‘Teri hai zameen’ is good, but what does baksheeh kar mean? It (the song) has nice serenity surrounding it.
Humko man ki shakti dena is nice as well. Banno already mentioned it.
I also like them because of their secular touch. That is why I took ‘Tu pyaar ka sagar hai’ in and was also thinking of taking up ‘Allah tero naam’ from Hum Dono, but somehow it slipped down the list. Thank God, Sunehri mentioned it.
The Kaajal bhajan has also this secular touch, which I appreciate, apart from its profound message!

Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo, as you might have noticed is turning more and more to my favourite song. It is so multi-layered. I think I’m going to write a separate post on it.
It will be sure on the mendicant list. But I’m still trying to figure out, how I’ll name it.

A qawwali-list is also in the offing!

“baksheesh kar”, in this context, means “to have mercy”. I remember Hindustani Christian hymns used to use the word in a similar context. By the way, I especially love the songs at the top of your list – Man tadpat (of course!), Tu pyaar ka saagar hai and Na main dhan chaahoon. All of them are absolutely beautiful.

Ah, a qawwali list! I have one of those ready too, but it’s going to take me a good while to post it (after all, I have to finish this ‘linked-posts-cycle’ I’ve jumped on to), but am waiting to see what you put on it! 🙂

Bhajan’s are not my cup of tea either, I do not like tea so maybe they are my cup of tea. I liked your statement “God give me this and god give me that, as if God is a servant to be ordered around.”. Not that I believe in God (I also cannot prove that he/she/it does not exist), but if God were to exist, this statement makes sense.

Nevertheless, I like most of the songs presented by you and other commentators. This is not unusual, I like many old hindi songs; I may not like some of the movies/stars/situations.

“This was well before a political party turned Ram into a bad word” — very perceptive. Guide is my favorite movie, and Dev Anand is my favorite hero, and what you say about the cleansing of one’s soul is the well accepted interpretation. I however think that Waheeda Rehman’s character & acting made this movie outstanding. Bhajan’s were probably not her character’s cup of tea, although it must said that they were not Raju’s either. The struggle shown at the end between the earlier atheist Raju & the later swami Raju is what i identified with the most. Perhaps the movie could have ended here, but I can see the many reasons it continued.

      July 15, 2011 at 11:08 am

I do like Bhajans now it seems! If God exists or not has been discussed a lot. I can understand both sides. What I find hard to believe is a god who punishes and transacts business with his/her devotees. If God is there, it/he/she is in you and me and everywhere, in the good and in the bad, in the happinness and sorrow, in love and hate and more than that. And since all these exist, God exists as well.

After seeing all the songs submitted here by me and others, I don’t even know how to define a bhajan but who cares! 😉

Waheeda’s acting in Guide was superb. I particularly like her in her confrontation with Marco in the caves. Superb scene!

“Perhaps the movie could have ended here, but I can see the many reasons it continued.”
To turn around Juvenal’s ‘give the populace bread and games’: Give the audience love stories and miracles!

I recently discovered your site from the remarks in other sites, and have been enjoying going through your posts. This is a great collection of bhajans, both in the post as well as in the Comments! I was going to add the Rafi bhajan “Badi der bhayi badi der bhayi …” from Basant Bahar, but then I saw the requirement that the singer had to be seated in front of the idol, so this song failed the test. Besides, I don’t know how to embed a song!
There is a song, Krishna O kaale Krishna … by Lata, in the movie, Main Bhi Ladki Hoon, where Meena Kumari is singing in front of Krishna, but she is complaining about her own dark complexion, so I don’t really consider it to be a bhajan. It is a beautiful song, nonetheless. As already explained, I don’t know how to embed songs, but I wanted to mention about this song.

I had nearly forgotten ‘Badi der bhayi’. It doesn’t fulfill my criteria, but it does yours, so it is completely okay if you post it. You can make a top 10 list out of ‘Bhajans sung by heroine with a sitar in hand’ ‘Bhajans sung with a semi sexy dance’ ‘Bhajans sung by hero’ ‘Bhajans sung by wandering mendicants’ ‘Bhajans as song competitions’, ‘Mandatory family bhajans calculated to score brownie points with bf’s mother’ ‘Love songs veiled as Bhajans’

You know, now that Ava’s set the ball rolling on ‘different bhajan lists’, why not one on bhajans supposedly sung to a deity (or at least purporting to be a prayer of sorts), but in actuality addressed to someone else present? Here are three I can think of, for instance:

Apni toh har aah ek toofaan hai (Kala Bazaar):

Dekho ji ek bala jogi (China Town):

Tan man dhan sab hai tera (Manchali):

(I don’t care really for that last song – it’s too ‘screechy bhajan’ for my taste, but it fits the bill).

Ever since I read this post first, I’ve been thinking of all the filmy bhajans that I’ve heard and am still wondering why majority of them are on Lord Krishna (Kaanha, Shyaam, Ghanashyam and the list goes on).

yeah, you are right, msot bhajans are about krishna, since the bhakti movement flowered in Vaishnavism. With Shiva, who burned kama it was a bit difficult maybe to show love to him.
Krishna and his multiple love affairs provides a much broader base for love based bhajans.

this new generation prazer was good, which film is that?

It is amazing, how one thought leads to another! I didn’t think of this until I saw the comment above by sunehriyaadein.

On the topic of bhajans that are not bhajans, there is one that sounds like a bhajan, but is actually about all the money in the safe, and is addressed to that money. I cannot remember the song, but it is sung in a male voice and unless you listen to the lyrics, it is easy to think it is a bhajan. I will post it as soon as I find out which song it is.

The Hollywood film was We Are No Angels (1955) starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray.
Here is the Marathi song, which I meant:

I know exactly what you mean and feel exactly like you do and can’t remember the song! Heck!
Isn’t it the film where three runaways (not runways) come to a house?

There is a song in Anand Math which goes “Jai Jagadish hare …”, and describes some of the ten avatars of Vishnu, but after looking at the video clip, I am not sure if they are singing it as a bhajan.

I was thinking of including it in my list, but have put it in my mendicant list.
I love anything with Geeta Bali init and this has more than that to speak for it.
Thanks for that Lalitha! Love this!

Harvey – This is lovely, and the comments too of course 🙂

Here is a soulful Kishore number ‘Apno ko kab hain shyam’ from ‘Mere Jeevan Saathi’ (1972) that one doesn’t hear of much. I guess it got buried in the sheer fabulosity of that musical tour de force of RD’s.

I also have another one of Kishore’s which I’ll save for your next bhajan installment about wandering mendicants!

      Wow, like WOW!
Rajesh Khanna singing a bhajan is quite an unusual sight and he gives even Krishna his crinkly smile!
Thanks for this Suhan! Knew all the numbers of this film, but had never heard of it. This is naturally a far cry from ‘Aao na, gale lag jao na”!
